Mayor Tishaura O. Jones recently introduced her proposal to allocate millions of dollars in immediate federal direct relief funding from the Biden Administration’s American Rescue Plan Act. Her $80 million relief proposal using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds contains significant direct economic support and housing assistance. Mayor Jones is challenging aldermen to approve the federal aid plan she recently submitted to help city residents cope with the continuing effects of the coronavirus pandemic by July 1. The package includes $12.44 million to help residents pay rent and utility bills and $2.5 million to help others cover mortgage payments. There also would be $500,000 for forgivable loans to help people make property tax payments.
